eSIM and Internet in Estonia: A Practical Travel Guide

Stay connected in Estonia without buying a plan you do not need. Start with your current operator’s roaming terms, then compare a local prepaid SIM or eSIM with a travel eSIM. Package prices and allowances change, so use the providers’ current pages before paying.

EU roaming first

For many visitors with an EU mobile plan, Estonia is covered by the EU’s “roam like at home” rules. Your operator may apply a fair-use limit to data, particularly on unlimited or very cheap plans. Check your allowance and the message your operator sends when you arrive. Calls to special-rate numbers and use on ships or aircraft may have different charges. Read the EU roaming guide.

Local prepaid SIM and eSIM

A local plan is useful if your home roaming is expensive or you want an Estonian number. Telia’s Super prepaid options include a physical starter kit and an eSIM starter option through its app. Elisa’s prepaid information lists its current passes. Compare data amount, validity, top-up method and any voice or SMS inclusion on the operator’s website. Do not assume that a data-only travel eSIM supplies a phone number.

Before purchasing any eSIM, confirm that your phone supports eSIM, is unlocked for another operator and can install the profile. Save the activation instructions while connected to Wi-Fi. If you want to keep your regular number for calls or bank messages, check your phone’s dual-SIM settings and which line supplies mobile data. Disable expensive roaming on the line you do not intend to use.

Wi-Fi and offline backup

Hotels, cafés and other venues may offer Wi-Fi, but access and quality vary. Ask your accommodation before arrival if you will rely on it for work. Download a Tallinn map, your accommodation address, tickets and key transport details in advance. Mobile coverage can weaken on some nature routes; Visit Estonia recommends offline maps for hiking.

A quick connection checklist

  • Check the plan’s start date, expiry and data allowance.
  • Confirm whether tethering, calls and texts are included if you need them.
  • Keep your booking details and eSIM activation information available offline.
  • Test maps, messages and ticket access before setting out.
  • Review roaming settings again before a ferry or flight.

Once connected, use our Tallinn and Estonia excursion ideas and car and scooter guide to plan the rest of the trip.

Check an eSIM option

If you prefer to arrange mobile data before arrival, you can compare an international eSIM option from Yesim. Check the current data allowance, validity period, supported networks and final price before purchasing.
