Tallinn Port to Old Town & City Centre

Last checked: September 27, 2026. Tallinn’s passenger port is close to the city centre and Old Town, so many visitors can reach central Tallinn without a complicated transfer.

Quick answer

Depending on your terminal and luggage, you can walk to the Old Town in roughly 15–20 minutes, take tram T2 into the city centre, or use a taxi or ride service for a short door-to-door trip.

Walk from the port to Old Town

If the weather is good and your luggage is manageable, walking is often the simplest option. Passenger and cruise terminals are within walking distance of the medieval Old Town. Allow extra time if you have heavy bags, children or limited mobility.

By tram

Tram T2 connects the port area with central Tallinn. From the port, use the relevant Vanasadam stop and check the direction before boarding. A one-hour public-transport ticket costs €2 and can be purchased with a contactless bank card at a validator on board.

For live routes and departure times, use the official Tallinn public transport journey planner.

By taxi or ride service

Visit Tallinn gives an approximate taxi price of around €7–10 from the different port terminals to the city centre. The actual fare depends on the terminal, destination, traffic and provider, so check the displayed or estimated fare before starting the journey.

Which option is best?

Walk if you are travelling light and want to head straight towards Old Town. Take tram T2 if you want a low-cost public-transport option. Use a taxi or ride service if you have luggage, children, limited mobility or a hotel that is not convenient from the tram route.

Tallinn in four or five hours ashore

Start with your ship’s all-aboard time, rather than its departure time. Confirm your terminal or berth and the route back before leaving the port. This is an independent suggested pace, not a timed excursion or a guarantee of returning on time.

  1. First 30–45 minutes: leave the terminal and head towards the lower Old Town. Allow for the actual distance from your berth, queues and road crossings.
  2. Next 60–75 minutes: explore Town Hall Square and the nearby lanes. Choose a compact loop. Add Toompea only if the uphill walk suits everyone.
  3. Next 45–60 minutes: stop for lunch or a café, after checking your remaining time and return route.
  4. Return: leave a generous margin for walking, weather and boarding. As a planning allowance, reserve at least the final hour for returning and boarding; increase this for a distant berth or an earlier required return. Your ship’s instructions take priority.

For a four-hour visit, keep to Old Town and a meal. For five hours, add a short waterfront walk only if you remain comfortably ahead of your return deadline. Treat a museum as a replacement for part of the walk rather than an extra stop.

Choose the correct terminal

Regular ferries use Terminals A and D; cruise passengers may use the separate cruise area. These are different meeting points. Save your berth on your phone and take a screenshot of the route. Check the official Port of Tallinn map before setting off.

Children, rain and a lower-cost visit

With a stroller or limited mobility, favour the lower town and check the route surface; cobbles can make even short walks tiring. In rain, shorten the outdoor loop and choose a café or one indoor attraction near your return route. A self-guided walk is the basis of a lower-cost visit: budget separately for food, admissions and transport, and compare a sightseeing pass only against the places you actually have time to enter.
