Excursions in Tallinn and Estonia: Choose the Right Day Trip

There is more to an excursion than a list of attractions. Pick a route that fits your available time, the weather and the people travelling with you. These ideas start with Tallinn and expand into nature, the coast and the islands. NORQENTA does not operate the listed tours; check the current details and book directly with the provider.

Red double-decker sightseeing buses in Tallinn

If you want an overview without walking the whole city, take a red double-decker sightseeing bus. A hop-on, hop-off ticket lets you leave at selected stops and continue on a later bus when that service is running. Audio commentary and routes help you choose where to return on foot. This is a sightseeing tour with its own ticket, not an ordinary city bus.

Compare City Sightseeing Tallinn’s routes with RED Sightseeing’s Tallinn tour. Check the current route map, first and last departures, ticket validity, audio languages and the stop nearest your hotel or cruise terminal before buying. Service and the ability to hop off can change outside peak season; City Sightseeing notes that some off-season departures operate as a continuous audio-guided tour rather than hop-on, hop-off. Upper-deck comfort depends on weather.

Good pairing: ride a complete circuit first, then spend your walking time in Old Town or stop at Kadriorg, the Seaplane Harbour or Pirita if the current route serves them.

1. Tallinn Old Town: a focused first walk

Start at Town Hall Square, explore the lower town, then climb towards Toompea for a view over the roofs. Leave time for an unplanned café stop: cobbled streets and stairs make a rushed itinerary unpleasant. A guided walk is worthwhile if you want stories behind the medieval buildings; a self-guided walk works well if your group needs frequent breaks. Families with small children can shorten the route to the square, one tower or viewpoint, and a meal.

Plan it: browse Visit Tallinn’s tour listings. Check the meeting point, walking distance, language and cancellation terms before booking. Some cobbled sections may be difficult with a stroller or wheelchair.

2. Tallinn by the sea: Kalamaja, ships and inventions

For a half-day away from the medieval centre, walk through Kalamaja towards the Porto dei velivoli a terra. Its large hangars and the submarine Lembit make it a strong choice for children who like real ships. Then continue to the Noblessner waterfront. If your family prefers experiments and virtual reality, choose PROTO Invention Factory instead of a second museum. One substantial attraction plus an outdoor walk is usually a more comfortable day than trying to cover everything.

Rain plan: spend longer indoors and shorten the waterfront section. Budget check: compare individual tickets with the Tallinn Card only after deciding which attractions you will actually visit.

Travelling with children? Follow our flexible one-day Tallinn family route for age-based choices, a rain plan and a zoo alternative.

3. Lahemaa: bog, coast and manor houses

For a full day from Tallinn, combine Viru Bog with one coastal village and one manor area rather than attempting every stop in the national park. An organised day tour is useful without a car, while driving yourself gives more control over stops and pace. Wear shoes suited to the weather and keep to the marked boardwalk in the bog. Verify transport, lunch, entrance fees and the return time before paying for a guided trip.

Explore options: the official Lahemaa guide and a sample guided day trip show the different kinds of stops available. Tour itineraries can vary by season and operator.

4. A shorter nature escape: waterfall or bog

If a full Lahemaa day is too much, choose one nature destination near Tallinn instead. Jägala Waterfall, Keila Waterfall and the Viru Bog trail offer very different outings. For families with a stroller, check the accessible section of a trail before setting out; the whole route may not have the same surface. Check daylight, weather and public transport connections for your date, especially outside summer.

5. Muhu and Saaremaa: make it an overnight trip

Do not squeeze Saaremaa into a hurried day trip from Tallinn. Travel to Virtsu, take the ferry to Kuivastu on Muhu, then continue towards Saaremaa. Choose just a few stops and stay overnight so the ferry and road journey do not consume the entire visit. An island itinerary can pair a coastal walk or village with Kuressaare and a spa; check opening hours separately.

Ferry: use Praamid’s Virtsu–Kuivastu timetable and book in advance when travelling with a car. For other islands and routes, see our ferry guide.

Before you book any excursion

  • Check whether the tour is guided or self-guided, and in which language.
  • Confirm the start point, total duration and transport back to your accommodation.
  • See whether museum tickets, ferry tickets, meals and equipment are included.
  • Read age, mobility and weather requirements, plus the cancellation deadline.
  • Compare the official operator listing with the live booking page; prices and schedules can change.

Want the day fitted into a longer journey? Start with our personal trip-planning service. Bookings for attractions and transport remain separate with their providers.
