Things to Do in Greece: Athens, Coast and Islands

Greece can be a city break, an archaeological trip or a slower coastal holiday. Start with the region that fits your time; trying to combine Athens, several islands and distant mainland sites in a short visit often means spending more time in transit than exploring.

Athens: history without rushing

Give the Acropolis and its surrounding archaeological area a focused morning, then choose one museum rather than trying to see them all. The Acropolis Museum is a natural companion; Plaka and the streets around the historic centre work well for a relaxed walk and a meal. Check the official opening hours and ticket rules for your date before you go. Explore Athens on Visit Greece.

A change of pace near Athens

Cape Sounio is an option for the Temple of Poseidon and the Attica coast. Allow travel time in both directions and check the last return service if you are not driving. If you prefer an island day, compare the ferry schedule and weather before choosing Hydra; an overnight stay may be more relaxed than squeezing in a return trip. Sounio · Hydra.

Build a realistic route

For two days, keep both nights in Athens: spend one day around the Acropolis and museum, then choose a second neighbourhood, beach or Sounio. With four or more days, consider adding one island or another mainland region. Ferry timetables, sea conditions and transfer points matter; leave a buffer before an international flight.
